The generation gap was bridged last week in Wells when students invited senior citizens into their school and gave them afternoon tea and entertainment.
It was a long-established engagement by the Alderman Peel High and more than 70 elderly people from villages around Wells thoroughly enjoyed their summer afternoon treat. There were many expressions of thanks from the VIP guests as they said farewell to their young hosts.
The event was organised by the school's head of technology, Jean Davies and music teacher, Duncan Taylor. Tom Gascoigne, of the English department, acted as compere for the event.
“It's a lovely event to be involved in because it bridges the generation gap between the students and the elderly visitors. Both groups get so much out of it,” said Miss Davies.
The afternoon included a tea of sandwiches and shortbread made by the students, musical entertainment and recitals of poetry the youngsters had composed as part of a project arranged by Poetry-next-the-Sea at Wells.
