Young nature enthusiasts are being offered the opportunity to help shape the future of one of Norfolk’s top nature and tourist attractions.

Pensthorpe Natural Park, near Fakenham, said they are “on the hunt for budding David Attenboroughs” aged between eight and 11 to join its junior board.

The board launched in 2015 with the aim of offering young people an opportunity to develop their learning and gain some practical experience about running a modern nature reserve.

Pensthorpe owner, Deb Jordan, said: “We passionately want to encourage young people away from technology and to get them out into the countryside to spend quality time with their families.

“Our junior board never fail to inspire and engage us with their insights. In return we impart our knowledge of the wonders of the natural world and get them involved in our conservation projects. It’s a collaborative partnership which inspires everyone involved.”

The board is made up of 12 members and they are invited to join the team at the reserve for up to four creative brainstorming sessions a year. During these sessions they give input on the development of new attractions, test ideas and give feedback on what the younger generations want from a family day out.

In return, board members receive an annual pass to Pensthorpe for up to four people and are invited to special launch events.

Current junior board member Louis Reinheld, 7, from Bagthorpe, said: “It’s a good thing to be involved in because we get to tell grown-ups what children really enjoy about nature.”

Board member Freddie Hingley, 6, from Weasenham, added: “We hope that more children will be interested in wildlife because we have helped.”

Pensthorpe gave further encouragement to children to get involved in nature during their annual Wild About the Wensum event on May 12, which was attended by popular television presenter Nick Baker.

During a speech, Mr Baker told adults that they can help to inspire the next generation to cherish the environment and that events like Wild About the Wensum can be life changing.

To join the board, applicants should email Pensthorpe with 250 words about why they love nature, a photo of them doing their favourite thing outdoors and a summary of why Pensthorpe should pick them.
