Bowled moves for England places

Fakenham's Jamie Chestney may be regarded as one of Norfolk's rising stars in the bowls world - but it was his 18-year-old county colleague Wayne Willgress who upstaged Mervyn King's brilliant pairs partner on Saturday to light up the greens at the Norgren club in Shipston-on-Stour.

The occasion was England's junior trial, and it is considered unthinkable that either Norfolk star should be left out when the squad is announced later this week - though Willgress, who skipped his Norfolk (Norwich) club-mates Charles West and dad Chris Willgress to the national triples title at Worthing last year, has yet to be capped.

Chestney, supported by Ben Paulley (Dorset), Stuart Holland (Sussex) and Danny May (Cumbria), lost 15-11 to Leicestershire's Matt Bass in the morning session, but recorded a 15-8 win over Nottinghamshire's Paul Riordan after lunch.

However, Willgress, with his front men Kieran Moss (Kent), David Roe (Cornwall) and Tom Cawdell (Bedfordshire), proved to be the success story of the trial, edging out Suffolk's Ian Catchpole, 18-17, in the first session, and beating Cambridgeshire's Richard Catton, 17-7, in the afternoon.

The county of Norfolk has a reputation for discovering talented bowlers. Young stars Chestney and Willgress follow in the footsteps of the Ward brothers, John Ottaway and Mervyn King, all of whom have their names etched in the sport's Hall of Fame.

Chestney, Ottaway and King were all in action again in the senior international trial on Sunday and are expected to keep their places in the England side to defend the British team title in Wales next month.
