Ben Darby was named Fakenham Town's supporters' player of the season on Saturday, and celebrated with a late goal which gave the Ghosts a 3-2 win over Godmanchester.

They finish at promoted Ely on Saturday, knowing they will end out of the Ridgeons Division One bottom two after holding up the rest of the section for most of the season.

The Ghosts' first-half performance earned a rare half-time dressing down. They too easily conceded an eighth-minute breakaway goal and had only a cracking James Bamford effort which slammed against the bar and a Tom Bryant effort to point at for their efforts.

Matty Garrod's early cross from the right set up Nick Haynes to head the equaliser, only for slack defensive work to concede the lead. Bamford found the woodwork again with a free-kick, but quickly converted a second for 2-2.

Julian Delicata set up Darby's late winner, but was one of three players involved in an injury scare in the Goddy area, home defender Ian Raisbury coming off worst with a badly gashed head.

Chris Evans is standing down as assistant manager at Fakenham Town confident that the right men are in place to guide the first team to success.

Evans said the distances he was having to travel was the reason behind his leaving Clipbush Park. He stepped in to run the first team during the start of the season crises when the club had just five players a week before the start of the campaign. He stayed on when former players Mark King and Stuart Woodhouse took over the reins.

Evans thanked the club for giving him the chance to manage at Ridgeons level. “In Mark and Stuart they have got the right people for the future of the club.”

He thanked King for helping him get his FA Level 2 coaching badge and club stalwart Neil Jarvis for his coaching help.

“Local lads will want to play for Fakenham.”
