Fakenham Town put their troubles behind them in dramatic fashion on Saturday by scoring an injury-time goal to record only their second win of the season.

The Ghosts’ footballing activities have taken a back seat to off-the-field issues in recent weeks, which prompted their previous home match against Great Yarmouth to be called off at short notice.

But, playing for the first time since the new “senior football admin” appointments of respected club stalwarts Simon Barnes, Doug Colman and Nolan Keeley, it was business as usual at Clipbush Park as they ended an eight-game winless run by beating Hadleigh United 2-1.

A number of the players who had refused to turn out against the Bloaters returned to action at the weekend.

The visitors were ahead at half-time, but Kyle Plumb levelled from the spot after 65 minutes before Ricky Claxton notched the winner in injury-time after a superb run, prompting wild celebrations on the pitch.

Fakenham Town: Pearson, Atkins, Calvert, Skipper, J.Williams, Youngs, Nelson, Cantwell, Plumb, Claxton, Taylor. Subs: Akers, Broady, Kerrison, not used: Wheeler, Robinson.

Fakenham remain bottom of the Thurlow Nunn Premier Division but have games in hand on their nearest rivals. They are in league action at Gorleston on Friday evening before hosting King’s Lynn Reserves in the League Knock-out Cup on Tuesday (both 7.45pm).

Following the administrative shake-up an extraordinary general meeting will be held at 7.30pm on Wednesday, November 8 to elect officers and set up a committee. Another priority is to appoint a new manager, with caretakers having been in charge since the exit of Robbie Harris last month.

President and acting chairman Bill Clayton commented: “A massive effort from the club members and supporters has enabled us to complete our last couple of fixtures, showing the passion that everyone here has for the club.”

Fakenham Reserves lost for only the second time in Division Two of the Anglian Combination, going down 2-1 at Holt United. The two sides meet again at Holt on Saturday in the Cyril Ballyn Cup.
