Despite defeat, Fakenham Town manager Andy Cunnigham was pleased with his side’s display at Wroxham in the Norfolk Senior Cup on Saturday as they put the “the worst performance” of his reign behind them at the first attempt.

The Ghosts travelled to Trafford Park off the back of a 2-0 defeat at March Town United in the League Cup, and the Clipbush Park boss pulled no punches following a lacklustre display from his side.

“The defeat at March was the worst performance I think I have seen since arriving at the club and I told the players they needed to put it right,” Cunnigham said.

“They responded well at Wroxham, we didn’t get the result we wanted, or the result our performance deserved but it was a really good performance; I couldn’t fault them for effort or spirit.

“Of course it’s frustrating, again we have come away thinking what could of, or should have been and we have been in that position a lot this season.

“We need to be more clinical in both boxes, we need to put our chances away but the performances are not far away from where they need to be.

“I’d be worried if we weren’t creating chances, but we are and I know that it will come; we just need to get one win when things come together and I am sure we will push on from there.”

There was a surprise in store for the Ghosts on Saturday, with Norwich City legend Grant Holt lining up for the opposition.

The veteran striker’s late goal was enough to seal the win, with Wroxham having taken a first-half lead through Jordan Bond whose shot from the centre of the penalty area was spilled under his body by Fakenham ‘keeper Tom Coombe.

On Saturday the Ghosts travel to Needham Market Reserves, who have won just one of their opening 12 games this season, and Cunnigham is confident this could be the weekend things click for his side.

“We are taking nothing for granted, Needham haven’t started the season well but we can’t afford to get complacent,” he said.

“I am confident if we play the same as we did at Wroxham we will come away with a win that we can build on and kick on from.”

Fakenham Reserves welcome East Harling to Clipbush Park on Saturday in the First Division of the Anglian Combination. They hit the goal trail last weekend, winning 6-0 at bottom side North Walsham.

Ben Darby and Luke Gray both scored twice for the visitors while Johnathan Lane and Danny Williams also got on the scoresheet.
