Fakenham Town picked up their first league point in four attempts on Saturday - and it would have been all three had it not been for visiting goalkeeper Darren Moyes.

With Neil Jarvis taking charge following last week’s exit of Robbie Harris the hosts came out with attacking intent and Lewis Sturman lashed an early shot just wide.

Reece Taylor was next to try his luck, but Moyes made a fine save.

With 10 minutes left in the half, Melford’s Nathan Rowe was lucky to escape with just a booking after fouling Matt Franks in the centre circle – Josh Youngs was booked for being too vocal about the challenge.

The last chance of the half came to the Ghosts, with Moyes frustrating the home side with a fine stop.

Taylor had the first real chance of the second half, weaving through the visiting defence only to see the keeper again thwart him.

The Ghosts then moved forward with purpose, as Andrew Skipper found Jordan Cantwell, who in turn picked out Kyle Plumb for the shot which Moyes saved well.

Taylor was next to try his luck, but could only watch as his effort was deflected wide for a corner.

Then, with 10 minutes left, Plumb raced down the right wing and cut into the box before firing across the face of the goal.

The visitors could have nicked all three points in the dying moments as a ball into the box was flicked on and struck the woodwork. Ryan Pearson was quickest to react and gathered as the referee blew for full-time.

Fakenham: Pearson, D.Williams, Akers, Youngs, Gilchrist, Sturman, Franks, Skipper (Atkins), Plumb, Cantwell, Taylor.

The Ghosts travel to FC Clacton in the league on Saturday, before welcoming Great Yarmouth Town to Clipbush Park on Tuesday (7.45pm).

Fakenham’s Reserves ran riot at Swaffham Town Reserves in the Cyril Ballyn Trophy, beating their neighbours 6-1 (Darby 5, Lane) and setting up a quarter-final at Holt on Saturday October 28. This weekend the Ghosts travel to Scole Reserves in the Norfolk Junior Cup.

Fakenham’s Ladies overcame Aylsham Ladies 8-0 for their first win of the season thanks to goals from King (5), Sands and Woods (2).
