Five-star Mattishall chase promotion

MATTISHALL entertained Corton looking to get their promotion campaign back on track having only picked up one point from their last two fixtures and won 5-1.

The home side started very brightly against a side that had the best away record in the league and having only conceded four goals in their previous nine away fixtures. Hall for Mattishall had the first chance but blazed over when well placed however he then became provider and his cross caused a goalmouth melee with the ball ending up at D Conolly's feet and he prodded it home to give the home side an early lead.

In the opening quarter it was all Mattishall and they increased their lead when Hall this time made no mistake from six-yards with an acrobatic scissor-kick.

The visitors had hardly entered into the Mattishall half but in their first real attack some slack marking in the home defence left French unmarked at the far post and he made no mistake. More hesitancy in the home rearguard nearly saw the visitors back on level terms but Fletcher's header looped over the bar.

Mattishall increased their two goal advantage when S Wooden, whose first attempt came back off the keeper, deftly lobbed the ball into the empty net.

Just before half-time Hall made the scoreline 4-1 when from deep wide on the right-wing he let fly with a shot which screamed into the top left hand corner.

Playing into the strong breeze in the second half, Mattishall's back four of Baldry, Starling, King and Lovell kept Corton's attack at bay. The hosts had two goals ruled out for offside, but the tireless Hall completed his hat-trick when he forced his way through and fired the ball into the net from an acute angle. With seven games remaining Mattishall must continue to give committed performances as they seem to brush aside the better teams but drop points against lesser sides.

Mattishall Reserves visited high flying North Walsham reserves and in a game which failed to reach any great heights lost 2-0.
