Fakenham’s Mervyn King emerged victorious from a tough test, and booked his place in the quarter-finals of the Welsh Grand Prix when he defeated 22-year-old giant-killer Calvin Leuty, from Spalding, 6-5, 14-5, in Llanelli on Monday.
“After losing in the first round in the world championships at Potters last month, I needed to do something here in Wales, and am very pleased with my form so far,” said King, who plays for the Gallow club in Fakenham.
“Having said that, Calvin, who beat Commonwealth Games champion Rob Weale in the first round, played very well, and the first set could have gone either way.”
With the score at 5-5 after eight ends, King sealed the first set with a single, then started the second set with a great treble.
But Leuty hit back with a full house, and the scores were again tied at 5-5, this time after four ends, when King took control, scoring nine shots over the next four ends to make it look like a comfortable victory.
King will face either Mark Royal or Wayne Hogg in the quarter-finals at 1pm today.
On Sunday, King confirmed his return to form against Scottish International Open champion Rob Paxton in the first round.
Dominating the first set, King could even drop a full house in each set before beating Paxton 15-5, 9-7.
In the national Champion of Champions tournament that was staged at Warners Lakeside at the weekend, King’s Gallow clubmate Jamie Chestney, who has been selected for England’s five-man team for the 2012 world outdoor championships, was bundled out in the first round by Mark Royal.
