BOWLS: Mervyn King survived a shock defeat at the hands of his Gallow club-mate and pairs partner Jamie Chestney to clinch a place in the final showdown for the bwin.com Bowls Super Series Champion of Champions title at Bristol.

In a tough four-day round robin King came through in the top four. Chestney and King were among the top eight to qualify for the final play-offs. But, while Chestney won only two of his seven matches, King returned four winning cards - enough to set him up for the final encounters with Sydney-based Scot David Gourlay, and England duo Paul Coleman and Danny Denison.

King went on the suffer defeats by Coleman and Gourlay to finish third in the final round robin. He recovered to beat Denison 8-1, 9-2 but it was too late to make any difference as Coleman went on to the final to face Gourlay, who won 8-7, 4-3.
