FAKENHAM Town re-discovered the way to goal on Tuesday night with a 1-0 win at Stowmarket.

They stay third-bottom, but are now within one point of Swaffham, two of Long Melford and four of Team Bury and Halstead.

Team Bury 2, Fakenham Town 0

FAKENHAM manager Wayne Anderson was left ruing the chances that went begging again as he was left to dwell on a scoreline that was no reflection of the game as a whole.

The Ghosts play their final home game of the season on Saturday when they are hosts to Saffron Walden (3pm).

The scoreline to this end-of-season match does no justice to the overall game as the Ghosts looked back on another game that saw them win plenty of possession, create numerous chances but fail to reap any dividends. Again they rued their lack of sharpness in front of goal.

A largely forgettable first half was marked by a Tom Rix penalty save after only three minutes and a Sam Garner scorcher that ricocheted off a post.

The game really came alive in the second half. Fakenham pinned their hosts back in their own half for long periods as they surged forward. Garner and Ben Coe were a constant threat, ably supported by Jake Betts and the ever-improving Dan Savory from midfield.

Savory went close, his strong surging run into the box ending with a fierce shot from 15 yards that was well palmed away by the keeper.

Garner’s low shot evaded the diving keeper but rebounded back off a post. Betts was causing problems down the flanks but his good work failed to find anyone able to put a finish to it.

As is now becoming the norm, Fakenham were dealt a sucker punch with 10 minutes left on the clock. Bury broke down the left, a pass inside found Clarke, who evaded two tackles before hitting an unstoppable shot from the edge of the area.

Bury then sealed an unlikely victory as Watson pounced on a loose ball in the area. As the Fakenham defence were screaming for a ball that looked to have gone dead in the build-up, he swept it into an unguarded net.

Fakenham: T Rix, M Gilchrist, J Pease, L Greer, S Harvey, J Bamford, J Betts (J Day), D Savory, L Bowley (T Harris), B.Coe, S.Garner. Subs R Rawlings.
