While ground conditions forced the postponement of Fakenham Town's home game with Stowmarket on Saturday, manager Wayne Anderson was busy thinking about ensuring he has a strong enough squad to meet a growing fixture backlog.

He has also been looking towards next season and a higher finish than this one which sees the Ghosts still bottom of the Ridgeons First Division.

“I've been talking to four or five lads trying to keep them here for next season,” said Anderson, in his early weeks as manager after coming to Clipbush Park from Downham.

He hopes to sign a striker, for whom a seven-day notice was being put in this week. “There are one or two other players I would quite like to bring in to give us a cutting edge to try to win games.”

He described the strength of the current squad as “average” and feared they would struggle to meet all the fixture requirements in a crowded March unless the squad was strengthened.

Several members of the under-18 squad are regular members of the first team squad, but the youth side faces playing Tuesdays and Thursdays to catch up on postponed fixtures, which would leave the first team squad depleted for Tuesday night games.

With that in mind, and following talks with acting chairman Geoff Saunders and under-18 manager Neil Jarvis, who has been helping with the first team, attempts will be made to sign some covering players.

Anderson said his immediate aim was to avoid the league's wooden spoon this season, finish in the top half of the division next season, and push on from there.

He felt the last two results had been unkind to Fakenham. They lost to a deflected free-kick at Swaffham, a game he felt the Ghosts should have won, and he thought they should have done better in their 4-2 home defeat by Team Bury.

On Saturday, Fakenham travel to mid-table Saffron Walden and on Tuesday they visit Stowmarket.
