Fakenham Town Reserves will ply their trade in the Anglian Combination Second Division next season, having sealed their promotion at Clipbush Park on Monday.

Going into the game against Horsford United, the Ghosts knew that a win, draw, or a defeat of less than six goals would be enough to see them promoted ahead of Brandon Town.

And as it turned out, it was a bore draw that got them across the line, with the best effort for either side being a Fakenham shot rattling the visitors’ woodwork in the second half.

It brings to a close a superb season under new management, with Dean Betts and Trevor Daniels having taken the reins at the beginning of the campaign and will now be preparing for a new challenge at a higher level.

Fakenham’s first ream played their last league game of the Thurlow Nunn Premier Division season on Saturday, drawing 1-1 with Walsham le Willows at Clipbush Park.

Prior to kick-off, the club announced Josh Youngs as the Supporters’ Player Of The Season winner. But Youngs won’t remember much of what happened after the second minute of the game after he was knocked out by the knee of his team-mate Tommy Rix as the keeper came out to claim a cross.

Both players spent several minutes on the ground receiving treatment, with Youngs subsequently being replaced by Lewis Sturman. Rix stayed on the field. The deadlock was broken on the half hour mark, Walsham scoring from the penalty spot after a mistimed Matty Dye challenge.

But within five minutes the Ghosts were level again. A cross into the box from Stuart Garner found Ashley Jarvis, and his deft header beat the visiting keeper for his 25th goal of the season.

The first chance of the second period came Fakenham’s way, Matty Dye with an effort to test the Walsham keeper.

Rix was called into action shortly after, with two saves in quick succession. Danny Williams replaced Matt Franks on 65 minutes, and Tim Cary replaced Kyle Plumb 10 minutes later, as the clock ticked by and the game ended all square.

The result saw the Ghosts finish in 15th position in the table, with their sights now firmly set on the Norfolk Senior Cup Final against King’s Lynn Town at Carrow Road on Monday, May 22 (7:30pm).
