It is hoped to get the entry for the Dr Fisher Cup, one of the oldest 20/20 competitions in the Norfolk cricket calendar, back up to 16 in time for its 75th anniversary season.

That was the hope of president of the host club, Fakenham, Gordon Turner, as he handed over the trophy, which dates from 1936, to this year's winners, Fakenham, writes John Cushion.

He expected his Fakenham Garden Centre to continue its main sponsorship well past that milestone. This year's entry for the cup, aimed at giving village sides a chance to enjoy top ground facilities, was eight.

At the Highfield Lawn final, Fakenham made 128-8, Brian Whitwood's 52 including two sixes and three fours, his skipper, man of the match Chris Crane's 51 including six fours, with Andrew Jarvis claiming 3-20 for Hillington. In the response, Mark Jarvis and Mark Osborne both made 32, and Hillington went into the final over 113-4 needing 16 to win. They claimed seven off Daniel Hubbard's first three deliveries, took a single and suffered a run-out going for a second off the next ball, then had a man run out and one bowled off the final two to end 121-7.

Turner praised Hillington's semi-final effort where Sean Fisher hit 118 in a match which saw over 400 runs. “We have had a miserable summer but some jolly good cricket,” he said, praising the sporting atmosphere in which the final had been played. “This is a wonderful competition and we hope for more teams to enter next year. It would be nice to get back to 16 teams.”

Organiser Terry Nelson thanked all the teams who entered, the ground staff for their work and those who sponsored the individual games - Fakenham Heel Bar, Hindringham FC, PMC, Papworth Butchers, James Beck Auctions, Johnson Bros and Kingsway tyres.
