Masterclass for new bowlers

PUBLISHED: 11:53 27 January 2011

BOWLS: The Gallow Indoor Bowls Club juniors' coaching team of Bryan, and John, together with help from club members Rita and David have travelled again. Wells Primary School was the venue for a series of bowls coaching sessions with Year 6 pupils.

Arranged between the Gallow club of Fakenham and the head teacher, there are five planned sessions.

Using two mats in the school hall, 20 pupils were introduced to the fundamentals of the game of bowls.

They then separated into teams for a round robin triples/pairs competition. The Red and Yellow teams tied for first place but the Blues and Greens were not far adrift, and there are four more weeks to go.

Although this sport is a new one to the pupils, they took to it easily. Accuracy was however a more difficult task.

As the weeks pass the skills will surely develop and perhaps a new star will emerge, appearing in years to come at the World Bowls Tournament, just played at Potters in Hopton and featuring two Gallow players.

Bowls is a game in which stamina, fitness and strength are not necessarily required. It suits any age group, and any physical build. Gallow has players aged from six to the upper eighties.

The school and Fakenham Sports Centre websites show the school’s photograph and carry a report of the occasion.
