Riders of all abilities followed routes of up to 100 miles as part of a registered British Cycling sportive.

The event marked the end of Active Fakenham Week, and the selection of activities across the town organised by the group. Richard Crook, one of the organisers, said: "It has been a good mix of things this year, and it's good to see people out in the sun enjoying it.

"There were things which deserved more attendence, but others were so oversubscribed they will be holding more session next week."

Not everyone at the event travelled the route by bike. Fakenham resident David Bird travelled on a scooter he built from parts three years ago, now used on his commute to the town's infant school, where he works.

He said: "When you're scooting, you don't get some of the aches you get on a bike, and it's something different.

"It can be slower than a bike, but it's the same cardio workout as running, but more gentle. They're quite popular in Europe, and we're trying to bring them in."

Carole Starkiss, 62, lives near King's Lynn and came to do the 25-mile route on her tricycle. She said: "It's the furthest I've been on it since I got it in May. I have a form of Lupus, which can bring me to a stand still or mean I lose my balance.

"Sometimes people wonder why I struggle, but not all disabilities are visible. Today has been fine, it's been nice to explore the countryside."

Fakenham town councillor Richard Lineham set off on a 15-mile route before heading out to lunch.

He said: "It's my third year of doing it, and I might have done the 25-mile route, but it's a bit hot so I'm watching it today. I love bikes, and I actually own three including a tandem. I can't get people to ride it with me unless they are steering, though."

Liz and Lottie Hitchcock, from Hadley in Suffolk, collected their medals when they finished around 10am. They came down from Wells, where they were holidaying for the bank holiday weekend. Liz's partner tackled the 100 mile circuit, while they took a ride to Walsingham on a shorter route.

Mrs Hitchcock said: "Lottie is a bit of a triathlete, like her father. We set off quite early, and it has ben very enjoyable.
