THIS was always going to be an Eastern Counties 1 test for Fakenham as they were missing key players. But the young side did well, it could have been a cricket score.

Newmarket is a fit and well-drilled side with some outstanding backs that could run and pass. In the first half Newmarket kicked good positionally, putting Fakenham under constant pressure. Fakenham did their best to keep the powerful runners under control. Half-time: 41-0.

In the second half Fakenham had a much better game, making the best of a bad job and playing to enjoy themselves. This encouraged them to try and play a more open game which gave the youngsters needed experience of running rugby.

Fakenham need not be disgraced by this result but they must take stock of the situation if they are going to stay in this league. This game proves they must work harder, train with commitment from more playing members and have a more settled side.

This week Fakenham are in the Norfolk Junior Cup semi-final away to UEA away, 12.30pm ko.
