Seasiders are champions

WELLS Town became Anglian Combination Division One champions on Saturday with three matches still to play.

THE Seasiders travelled to Stimpson’s Piece knowing just a single point would be enough to clinch the league title.
They pounced on to a defensive mistake in the 15th minute and a pin-point cross from Grocott was headed home by East. In the 22nd minute Sutherland-Gray created a brilliant goal from a half-chance when he volleyed home from 18 yards.
On the half-hour Sutherland-Gray scored his second and Wells’ third when he turned and converted another well-placed shot.
Wells were surging forward at every chance and on the hour Sutherland-Gray completed his hat-trick when he ran onto a perfect through-ball and slipped it under the advancing keeper.
McCallum added No 5 for the Seasiders when he curled home a fine shot from outside the area, to the delight of their strong following.
Wells Town host Watton United on Saturday (kick-off 2.30pm).
Wells Town 3, Horsford United 0
Wells Town played Horsford at Beach Road and produced another solid performance.
A seventh-minute free-kick was turned away for a home corner, but on the 11th minute Sutherland-Gray pounced on a loose ball and broke the deadlock. Just before the interval Harrison went on a mazy run and blasted home from 18 yards.
Straight from the re-start Sutherland-Gray chased down a loose ball, turned his marker and chipped the keeper.
Wells introduced 16-year-old Ben Scott for his first taste of senior football, and he certainly looks one for the future.
